What is generative AI?
Generative AI is a class of artificial intelligence that produces new content instead of only analyzing existing data. Give it a prompt and it generates text, images, code, audio, or video that did not exist before. It learns the patterns in huge amounts of training data, then uses those patterns to create something new that fits your request. This is the technology behind ChatGPT, Midjourney, GitHub Copilot, and most of the AI tools people talk about today.
In plain words
Older AI was mostly a sorter. Show it a photo and it tells you "that's a cat." Generative AI is the opposite: ask for a cat and it draws you one that has never existed. It learned what cats look like from millions of examples, and now it can produce a fresh one on demand. Same idea works for text, music, and code.
Where you see it
- Text — drafting emails, summaries, and documentation with large language models.
- Images and video — Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Sora turn prompts into visuals.
- Code — GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code write and refactor software.
- Audio — voice generation, music, and transcription cleanup.
The common thread: each tool takes a short instruction and produces a much larger, finished artifact.
Common pitfalls
- It makes things up. Generative models can state false information or invent details with full confidence. Verify anything that matters.
- Output reflects its training. Biases, dated facts, and gaps in the training data show up in what it produces.
- It does not understand, it predicts. The model is matching patterns, not reasoning about truth, so it has no built-in sense of "correct."
- Ownership and licensing are murky. Who owns AI output, and what it was trained on, is still being settled. Check before you publish or ship.
