What is artificial general intelligence (AGI)?

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a hypothetical AI that could understand, learn, and solve problems across any domain at least as well as a person, including tasks it was never trained for. It does not exist today. Every AI system we use now is narrow AI: it can be excellent at one thing, like writing text, recognising images, or playing chess, but it cannot transfer that skill to an unrelated problem on its own.

In plain words

Today's AI is like a brilliant specialist who knows one subject inside out but is lost outside it. AGI would be more like a sharp generalist who can walk into any field, pick up the rules, and become competent fast, the way a curious person can switch from cooking to coding to fixing a bike.

Why it matters

  • It sets expectations straight. Knowing that today's tools are narrow keeps you from over-trusting a model outside the job it was built for.
  • It frames the debate. Most discussion about AI risk, jobs, and regulation is really about how close AGI is and what would happen if it arrived.
  • It is a moving target. There is no agreed test for AGI. As AI gets better, the bar for "general" keeps shifting.

Common pitfalls

  • Mistaking fluency for general intelligence. A model that writes convincingly is still narrow. Sounding smart is not the same as reasoning across any task.
  • Believing it is imminent or impossible. Serious experts disagree by decades. Treat confident predictions in either direction with caution.
  • Confusing AGI with superintelligence. AGI means human-level breadth. Superintelligence means far beyond it. They are different claims.
