In April 2026, GitHub renamed "coding agent" to "cloud agent." It's not just branding. Copilot cloud agent now goes beyond pull requests — it handles research, planning, and task execution across the entire development cycle. GitHub also added model selection (Claude, Codex), unified active user metrics, and introduced rate limits: 300 premium requests per month on Pro, 1,500 on Pro+.
Agents are no longer an experiment. They're no longer just autocomplete. And that changes how developers work.
Over 51% of all code committed to GitHub in early 2026 was generated or substantially assisted by AI. Projections put that at 60% by year's end. 78% of Fortune 500 companies have AI-assisted development in production. JPMorgan Chase reports 60,000 developers on AI tools with a 30% velocity increase.
But there's another side: AI-assisted code contains 2.74× more vulnerabilities than human-written code, with 45% of AI code samples failing security tests. Issue counts in projects with high AI code ratios grow 1.7×. More code doesn't automatically mean better code. In fact, developers report feeling 20% more productive with AI tools, yet objective measurement shows 19% slower task completion when accounting for extended reviews and rework. The code gets written fast; the cost shows up later.
This is the tension we deal with at client projects every day. Speed goes up, but without proper controls, so does technical debt.
When an assistant completes lines of code, the developer stays in control — writing, reviewing, confirming. When an agent takes an issue and returns a pull request, the role fundamentally shifts: from author to reviewer and delegator.

David's observation matches the pattern we see across client projects. Writing quality issues and PR descriptions is becoming as important as writing code in 2026. A developer who can effectively delegate to an agent, with clear context, limited scope, and measurable goals — achieves significantly better results than one who sets an agent loose on a vague brief.
Jakub Vacek, who runs AI coding workshops for DX Heroes clients, has a practical approach to keeping agent output reviewable:

The pattern is consistent: developers who succeed with AI agents aren't the ones generating the most code. They're the ones who break work into reviewable chunks and treat AI output as a draft requiring human judgment. AI genuinely helps with onboarding on new codebases and creating documentation scaffolds, but even there, over-trusting its confident delivery of incorrect answers is a real risk.
AI tool adoption in enterprises isn't a single story. Some organizations are just getting started. Others already have licenses, trained teams, and established processes. And then there are companies that can't start at all because even enterprise-grade tools don't meet their security requirements.
