The original German festival probably won't add new features to your software. If your developers celebrate it, the effect might even be the opposite. Hacktoberfest is different. It can bring you new features, fixed bugs, and fresh organic traffic, basically for free.
What is Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open-source software and the people who build it. Through the month, it encourages everyone to contribute to their favorite projects and push open source a step further.
Companies that take part can tweak their public repositories so enthusiasts find them easily and help resolve issues or build new features the maintainers can then use. Digital Ocean rewards anyone who makes at least 10 pull requests with custom Hacktober merch.
Who is Hacktoberfest for?
Short answer: everyone. That's a stretch, of course. A cleaning lady probably won't code a new feature for her favorite repo, though that doesn't mean she can't. Hacktoberfest is about community, teamwork, and most of all, having fun.
JavaScript, TypeScript, or PHP developer? There's surely a repo you can contribute to. C-level or team lead? Prepare your repositories and watch bug fixes and new features land in front of you. Not confident in your coding? Try helping with projects that don't involve code. If you're a tech writer, or you like writing about software development, team management, and related topics, try our DX Knowledge Base repo.
This event isn't only for individuals. Companies can take part too, and it brings plenty of benefits.

Free bug fixes and new features? Yes please
We at DX Heroes are big fans of open-source software, so taking part is almost a must for us. We've prepared custom rewards for contributors and we're eager for October to kick this off. Events like this help your company in plenty of ways:
- a stronger position in the community,
- more traffic to your website,
- more resolved bugs,
- new features for your products,
- a sense of connection during hard times.
It can genuinely put a smile on your developers' faces when the number of people fixing that annoying login bug jumps from 3 members of your front-end team to 10 enthusiasts from around the world, who not only fix the login screen but add OAuth and wire up the API call.
Let's celebrate open-source software together, as a community. Let's fix some bugs, build new features, connect with fellow enthusiasts and like-minded companies, and have fun.
